In book 8 we read The Berenstain Bears Think Of Those In Need. Our children learned kindness, generosity and how to be a Good Samaritan. We started the lesson set off by discussing how the Holidays would be different if we did not have all of the decorations, parties, goodies or presents? How would it feel if we were not able to have or do those things anymore due to lack of money, health, etc.?
I took that discussion to the streets the next day and had
the children make a map of the neighborhood. Then we offered to help an elderly
neighbor in our old neighborhood since we only have 3 neighbors anywhere near
us at our new home. I feel that it is
even more important that our children know their closest neighbors. I had them
complete the worksheet below:
The Grinch is the perfect example of someone who needs to
learn kindness and generosity towards people in his community. We read the
storybook and then made Who Pudding to eat while we watched the movie (sorry
there are no pictures of the Who Pudding since the kids and I ate it almost
immediately, Yummy! LOL). I had seen this fantastic creative writing assignment
floating around Pinterest in December and had the kids do it as part of this
lesson:
To end this set of lessons the children both donated toys to
Toys-for-Tots and made plates of cookies for neighbors. Then they sang carols
while they delivered their cookies.
These are just a few of the activities that we completed the
last few weeks in Bear Country. Did you follow along with the lesson plans for
this book? If so I would to hear what your family did!
Make it a magical
homeschooling day in Bear Country,
